Australians flock back to Tesla’s new and improved midsized electric SUV
Tesla sales have rebounded in Australia thanks to strong demand for the heavily updated Model Y SUV.
The midsized electric SUV registered its best sales month for nearly a year with 3580 units shifted in May. It was the updated ‘Juniper’ model’s first full month in showrooms.
It marked a 123 per cent increase on the 1609 Model Ys sold in May 2024, and reduces the year-to-date decrease from 58 percent at the end of April to 27% at the end of May.
Tesla Australia registered only 500 vehicle sales in 500, with the Model Y accounting for 280 of those.
Tesla sales have been struggling both globally and locally through a combination of factors. These include production/shipping delays, increased competition, and even negative consumer response towards the increased political activity of company CEO Elon Musk.
The updated Model Y includes significant improvements to technology, styling and the driving experience.
Sales of the related Model 3 sedan remain an area of concern for Tesla. The company sold just 319 units locally in May, with year-to-date sales of 2583 equating to a 71 percent decrease compared with this time last year.
Tesla Australia new-car registrations so far in 2025 sit at 9557 – nearly half the 18,433 units documented for the same period in 2024.
The latest Tesla figures were again reported by Australia’s Electric Vehicle Council after the US brand last year pulled out of the country’s official ‘Vfacts’ reports from industry body the FCAI.
In the same EVC report, Swedish EV brand Polestar continued to show improved sales. May registrations of 243 units was a 66 percent increase over May 2024, with year-to-date registrations up 41 percent to 834 units.
Polestar has recently bolstered its range with the additions of the Model Y-rivalling Polestar 4 and the Porsche Macan-rivalling Polestar 3.
The Polestar 4 is the brand’s most popular model currently, with 502 registrations in 2025 to date, followed by the Polestar 2 sedan (261) and Polestar 3 SUV (71).
The Polestar 3 Dual Motor was last month named Chasing Cars’ 2025 Luxury Car of the Year.
May sales results for other car brands are due to be released by the FCAI tomorrow, Wednesday 4th June.
