Why did the Kia Tasman win over titans of the dual-cab segment in Australia? The answer is simple and stark
Kia’s long-awaited, clean-sheet venture into the utility segment has hit the ground running in Australia, with the Tasman taking the win over established rivals.
Dethroning the Ford Ranger as the segment benchmark, Chasing Cars selected four high-spec variants priced at, or around, the sub-$70,000 mark, with the Toyota Hilux and Mitsubishi Triton also represented in Australia’s first Tasman comparison test.

Tested against three key criteria: work, play and everyday suitability, weighted against their overall value proposition, the Tasman, Ranger, Hilux and Triton were put to the test.
Armed with a V6 turbo-diesel and knobbly tyres, the Ranger appeared the inevitable winner, but ageing technology and inconsistent off-road capability saw it fall short against the new Tasman, which maintained consistent performance across all criteria.
Most of all, the Korean challenger innovated in a segment flourishing in quantity, not quality, of competition.
