As Australians grapple with an increasingly high cost of living, Mazda’s new electric SUV skips over headline-grabbing specs for an affordable price tag
Mazda’s Chinese-built venture with Changan Automotive is set to welcome its second vehicle to Australia in September 2026, with a Tesla-Model Y-beating price of $53,990 before on-road costs.
The CX-6e medium SUV, a sibling vehicle to the Deepal S07, will initially debut in two grades – GT and Azami – with the latter gaining enhanced exterior features and a $56,990 entry point.
Pricing for Mazda’s CX-6e SUV follows the recently detailed Mazda’s 6e sedan, which in a similar fashion spans two model grades starting from $49,990 (GT) and scaling to $52,990 (Azami). That car arrives in July this year.
Crucially for the high-riding CX-6e, an entry point of $53,990 undercuts the Tesla Model Y RWD ($58,900), Zeekr 7X RWD ($57,900) and Kia EV5 Air FWD ($56,770) – Australia’s top-three best sellers in segment.
Meanwhile, the technically related Deepal S07 starts on offer from $46,990 driveaway.
Both Changan-derived Mazda electrics share the same rear-wheel-drive platform, 78kWh battery, and 190kW/290Nm motor, good for 484km of driving range (WLTP). Charging for both models from 30-80 percent on a rapid DC charger will take around 15 minutes (or around 21 minutes for 10-80 percent).
Mazda has become the latest established nameplate, alongside the likes of Kia and Hyundai, to introduce a Chinese-built electric vehicle after initially offering a vehicle from its home country – in this case, the MX-30 Electric – that saw limited sales that was not helped by its high price.
With more affordable manufacturing costs allowing a lower purchase price, along with a concentrated local focus on EVs, China is being seen as a go-to location to produce new EVs.
Confirmed to launch in Q3, 2026, Mazda has unveiled a full list of specifications for Changan-derived, two-grade-strong CX-6e.
Beginning with the base-model GT, headline features include a massive 26.45-inch multimedia screen spanning from the centre to the passenger side of the dash, a head-up display, 23-speaker sound system, heated and ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, and a wireless device charger.

Stepping into the range-topping CX-6e Azami grants digital exterior mirrors, a digital rear vision mirror, and 21-inch alloy wheels. In an identical offer to the 6e, the first 1000 CX-6e pre-orders will gain a complimentary upgrade from GT to Azami trim at no additional cost.
Only one option will be available for both CX-6e grades upon launch: a $1000 warm beige interior trim upgrade.
All prices listed are before on-road costs.
