The Volkswagen Tiguan midsize SUV’s newest cousin priced at $77,990 RRP — meet Terramar VZe
The Cupra Terramar was released earlier this year in mild hybrid and combustion guises, and now the flagship VZe plug-in hybrid has arrived.
The new Terramar VZe combines a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine and electric motor that drive the front wheels through six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Total outputs are 200kW and 400Nm, which sends the Terramar from 0-100km/h in 7.3sec (claimed). Slower than the 2.0L turbo-petrol VZ (5.9sec), the VZe has a different ace up its sleeve.
A 20kWh battery makes for a combined WLTP electric driving range of 110km and fuel consumption of just 0.5L/100km.
Cupra has been a PHEV early mover in the VW group, getting its midsize plug-in SUV to market ahead of the Skoda Kodiaq and Volkswagen Tiguan.
The Terramar VZe enters an increasingly crowded space, and becomes one of the more expensive mainstream family PHEVs among the BYD Sealion 6, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, Jaecoo J7, Geely Starray EM-i, and more.
Terramar VZe’s standard equipment includes 20-inch ‘Hadron’ black and copper wheel and tyre package, Matrix Ultra active high-beam headlights, 360 degree camera, power tailgate and smart entry.
Standard tech includes a 10.25-inch digital cockpit, 12.9-inch multimedia touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto plus a wireless phone charger.
Inside, there’s a ‘Supersport’ heated steering wheel; Deep Burgundy leather upholstery sports bucket seats with power adjustment, heating and driver memory; 12-speaker Sennheiser sound system; and tri-zone climate control.
Some optional extras include a panoramic sunroof ($2000), Century Bronze matte paint for $2900, or $620 for Dark Void premium paint. All other paint colours are at no extra cost.
Pricing for the entry level Terramar, S mild hybrid starts at $58,490, with the two combustion, mid-level V and VZ variants priced at $66,490 and $73,490 — all before on-road costs.
Driveaway pricing for the flagship VZe PHEV will vary across states. Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT start from $82,990. New South Wales and Victoria add an extra $5k, at $83,490 and Western Australia’s driveaway price is $85,490.
