Renamed small SUV gets key changes to features and under the skin
Chery’s erstwhile Omoda 5 small SUV has been revamped and rebooted as the ‘C5’ for 2025 and “simplified” into a two-variant model line-up.
Why the rebranding? That’s because Chery plans to launch Omoda as its own standalone brand, in line with other markets, in the second half of this year.
Competing at the more affordable end of the market, the updated C5 will seek to snatch the attention of buyers looking towards the MG ZS, Hyundai Venue and the run-out Mitsubishi ASX.
The MY25 C5 kicks off with the base Urban variant, priced from $29,990 driveaway, which is $2000 more than the outgoing (MY24 FX) entry version in runout pricing. However, the update brings upgrades such as LED headlights, a six-speed dual-clutch transmission – replacing the old CVT – and variable coloured ambient lighting.
One key revision is that the base Urban now features independent rear suspension, former exclusive fitment to the old flagship GT variant, which replaces the old, more cost-conscious torsion beam rear design.
The high-spec variant is the Ultimate, which starts from $34,990 driveaway. It’s $1000 pricer than the MY24 EX that it effectively replaces compared to current runout pricing.
Appearance wise, the C5 features a revised front fascia with a “next iteration” remodelling of Chery’s “diamond-shaped grille”. The Ultimate fits new-look 18-inch wheels (the Urban fits 17s).
Like the outgoing range, the new C5 is powered by a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol four cylinder engine outputting 108kW and 210Nm, driving the front wheels.
Standard interior features for the base Urban includes dual-10.25-inch LCD display for driver instrumentation and touchscreen media, intelligent voice command, and both wireless and wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The step-up to the Ultimate adds an eight-speaker Sony-branded audio system, synthetic leather trim, dual-zone climate and other niceties such as a power sunroof.
Standard safety features across the range include AEB, lane departure warning, lane keeping, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert and driver attention monitoring. The C5 fits seven airbags.
Following in the precedence of the change to C5, the electric Omoda E5 will be also renamed, to ‘E5’, in due course with Chery’s shift to establishing the Omoda brand as a standalone.
