New “Uber spec” variant Tesla Model Y will feature six seats and an extended body when it launches to the Australian market this year
A newly uncovered approval from Australia’s Road Vehicle Standards (RVS) legislation (ROVER) has confirmed that the highly anticipated six-seater Tesla Model Y has been approved for local sale, boosting speculation that the brand’s new, larger SUV could launch in a matter of months.
The extended body ‘Y’ will feature three-row seating when it arrives in Aussie showrooms, offering second row ‘captains chairs’ along some 200mm of additional body length, 50mm of additional height, and an extended 3040mm wheelbase (up 150mm) over existing Model Y variants.
The forthcoming ‘Y’ will also be Tesla’s heaviest yet, tipping the scales with a tare weight of 2088kg (up 60kg).
Chasing Cars previously reported on the Chinese-market Model Y L and its likelihood for Australia. At that time, we translated the Chinese-market price to equate to approximately $87,000 before on-road costs in our market.
While the six-seat Model Y’s powertrain is yet to be confirmed, it will likely mirror the specification offered in the Chinese market – Australian vehicles are assembled in the same Chinese facility as CDM versions.
If this is true, the three-row Model Y should launch in a dual-motor configuration, producing front and rear motor outputs of 142kW and 198kW respectively.
Power will likely come from an 82kWh battery developed in South Korea.
In China, the six-seater ‘Y’ produces a driving range of up to 751km (held to lenient CLTC standards), and can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in a claimed 4.5 seconds.
