Ford Ranger top and BYD Shark in top five as utes dominate best-selling vehicles in strong June market
Four utes filled June’s top five best-selling new vehicles, as the Australia market enjoyed a big bump from widespread end-of-financial-year deals.
Industry body FCAI has reported 122,509 new-car registrations for last month, in what is historically the strongest month for showroom sales.
The June total increases to 127,437 when adding Tesla and Polestar results, which are reportedly separately via the Electric Vehicle Council.
Last month’s result represents a 7 percent increase over June 2024. The previous best month for 2025 was March with 112,746 units.
The most popular vehicle for June was the Ford Ranger (6293 units), followed by Toyota’s Hilux (6195 units), outlier Tesla model Y midsize SUV (3457 units), the Isuzu D-Max (3119 units), and wildcard BYD Shark 6 PHEV (2993).
Toyota’s RAV4 was a surprise omission from the top five, with 2421 units nearly 40 percent down on the same month last year (3907 units).
Expanding to the total car market, Toyota continues to dominate as Australia’s favourite brand, nearing ever closer to a 20 per cent share of the entire market – last month, Toyota’s market share improved from 19.2 per cent to 19.9 per cent year on year. Toyota’s 20,225 sales for the month of June were trailed by rival brand Ford, which reported 10,103 deliveries.
Year to date, Toyota’s total vehicle sales rise to 120,978 deliveries – nearly three times more than fellow Japanese automaker Mazda, which is second with 48,942 deliveries.
Ford is nipping at the heels of Mazda for its second place position in the market. Currently third on the podium for 2025, Ford has documented 47,300 deliveries year-to-date – 1642 vehicle sales short of usurping Mazda.
Newcomer to the Australian market BYD should revel in its position as Australia’s fourth most popular brand for June. BYD secured 8,156 deliveries last month, spearheaded by its segment-defying Shark 6 plug-in ute (2993 deliveries) and popular midsize electric Sealion 7 (1795 deliveries). Both vehicles have been on sale in Oz for less than 12 months.
The SUV continues to be Australia’s most popular segment, making up 58.3 per cent (up 9.4 per cent year on year) of the total market for June, with 71,411 new SUVs pulling into Aussie driveways.
Ute sales also thrive. The ute market is up 11.2 per cent year on year, making up 25.3 per cent of the total June market with a strong 31,021 sales figure.
Passenger vehicles continue to decline in popularity as utes and SUVS soar. The passenger vehicle market saw a 27.9 per cent decrease year on year, now representing just 12.4 per cent of the total market with 15,190 units.
