Who said EVs can’t go the distance? World record for distance travelled on a single battery charge broken by Polestar’s long-range single motor SUV

Polestar has officially laid claim to a Guinness world record, taking the title of ‘longest journey by a production battery-powered electric sports utility vehicle on a single charge’. The record was broken by a team of three drivers in a Polestar 3 midsize SUV

A Polestar 3 Long range Single motor was used to set the record of 935.44km, which results in an efficiency of 12.1kWh/100km – nearly 6kWh lower than the Polestar’s quoted WLTP figure of 17.6 – 20.3 kWh/100 km.

According to Polestar, the midsize EV still had 20 percent of battery charge remaining when it passed its quoted WLTP figure of 706km, and travelled for an additional 12.8km once the vehicle displayed zero percent battery charge.

Most incredibly, the record was set on public roads in the UK, using an unmodified vehicle driving on standard 20-inch wheels and Michelin Sport 4 EV tyres.

Additional features of the Polestar 3 LR SM include 400-volt electronic architecture, a 111kWh lithium-ion battery, maximum output of 220kW/490Nm, and quoted charge times of 11 hours on 11kW AC power and 30 minutes for a 10-80 percent DC charge peaking at 250kW.

The three drivers, Richard Parker, Sam Clarke, and Kevin Booker, worked in tandem over the course of 22 hours and 57 minutes to set the record, switching drivers every three hours.

The Polestar’s record was verified by an independent Guinness World Record judge, who confirmed that the vehicle had no modifications and verified the set distance through video footage, odometer readings, and GPS data.

The Polestar 3 also holds the title of Chasing Cars Luxury Car of the Year, pipping the BMW 5 Series and Lexus GX. Pricing for the Polestar 3 LR SM starts at $121,920 before on-roads.

Related records include ‘greatest distance by electric vehicle, single charge (non-solar)’, held by TUfast Eco Team in Germany with a distance of 2573.79km. The vehicle that holds the title, named “muc022”, took 70 students two years to build. The car is not road legal.

The record for ‘greatest distance driven on a single tank of fuel’ is held by Miko Marczyk, a professional rally driver, who managed to drive an unmodified fourth-generation Skoda Octavia 2831km on public roads between Poland, Germany, Paris, and Belgium.
