MG’s class-leading 10-year / 250,000km warranty now adorned with excessive fine-print
MG Australia will back out of its unrestricted 10-years or 250,000km warranty term less than one year after it was introduced.
From July first, private-use MG vehicles will now be sold with a seven-year / unlimited kilometre warranty, with the option to qualify for full-term coverage – an industry standard employed by many auto makers including Nissan (10 years or 300,000km) and Mitsubishi (10 years or 200,000 km).
Meanwhile, light commercial MG vehicles are hit with a shorter five-year / unlimited kilometres introductory warranty, which can be increased to seven years or 200,000km – an offer exclusive to private-use customers who meet the warranty extension requirements.
To qualify for an extended warranty period, MG customers must use their vehicles privately, carry out repairs exclusively with MG parts, and complete all scheduled servicing on time at an authorised MG dealership.
Previously, MG’s 10-year warranty remained valid provided that the vehicle was maintained in accordance with the service schedule, using MG-branded or equivalent parts.
MG will honor its 10-year or 250,000km warranty term to any MG vehicle purchased on or before the 30th of June 2025, whilst vehicles purchased on or the 31st of July 2024 retain a seven-year / unlimited kilometre warranty.
MG customers seeking to use their non-commercial vehicle for commercial use (such as ridesharing) will now answer to a blanket warranty period of seven years or 160,000 kilometers, whichever comes first.
Further, commercial vehicles, a fleet which is currently limited to the upcoming MG U9 ute, come with an even shorter non extendable period of five years or 160,000km – two years and 40,000km less than LDV’s warranty period for its mechanically identical Terron 9 ute.
MG defines commercial use vehicles as any vehicle which has been used at any time for commercial purposes, and defines light commercial vehicles as any vehicle designed for goods and passenger transport, including utes, vans, buses and trucks.
IM Motors, MG’s new foray into the Australian luxury vehicle segment, offers five years / unlimited kilometres of warranty to non-commercial use vehicles.
This period can be extended to seven years / unlimited kilometres providing the vehicle is serviced on time at authorised IM Motors dealerships. Commercial use IM Motors vehicles benefit from a non-extendable 5 years or 160,000km warranty term.
IM Motors officially launched into the Australian market in April 2025, debuting two models; the IM5 sedan and IM6 SUV. Both vehicles feature premium components, including 800-volt electronic architecture, and start at $60,990 drive-away.
