Less is more says MY26 Chery Tiggo 7. Drive-away pricing to remain unchanged, but driveline and safety to take a big hit

Chery has revealed a slew of updates coming to the MY26 Tiggo 7, which will remain at a category-breaking $29,990 drive away as one of Australia’s cheapest midsize SUVs.

The updated Tiggo 7 will continue to be offered in two grades – Urban and Ultimate – with the latter offering the likes of power-adjust front seats, sunroof, powered tailgate, and new puddle lights for an additional $4000, remaining at $33,990 drive away.

Following in the footsteps of the Tiggo 4, the Tiggo 7 drops ‘Pro SE’ from its nomenclature, but will remain, in essence, the same as its predecessor.

Its sharp drive away pricing significantly undercuts segment leaders Toyota RAV4 and Mazda CX-5, while also remaining firmly competitive with fellow Chinese mid sizers MG HS and GWM Haval H6.

On the outside, the new Tiggo 7 models gain projector type LED headlamps and taillamps, front sequential indicators, and retain LED DRLs. Underneath, a new multi-link independent rear suspension setup replaces the current torsion-beam rear end.

Inside, the Tiggo 7 is largely unchanged, aside from new steering wheel buttons. It remains equipped as standard with twin 12.3-inch displays (driver cluster and infotainment touchscreen), manual-adjust front seats, and dual-zone air conditioning.

In fact, the largest interior changes could be viewed as detrimental. An unbranded six-speaker sound system replaces the outgoing Sony eight-speaker system, the full size spare replaced with a space saver, and the current built-in GPS to be retired entirely.

Furthermore, Chery has confirmed that the updated Tiggo 7 will not utilise the driver-knee airbag seen on the outgoing model. A spokesperson from Chery confirmed to Chasing Cars that the company is “working closely with ANCAP for new model ratings.”

Chery has additionally revealed that the model will now feature its 1.5-litre turbocharged four cylinder seen in the Tiggo 4 small SUV, doing away with the current 1.6-litre turbo unit.

Consequently, combined power figures for the MY26 Tiggo will drop from 137kW / 275Nm to 108kW / 210Nm – a 21-percent reduction in engine power and 24-percent reduction in torque.

The MY26 Tiggo 7 also exchanges its current seven-speed DCT for a new six-speed unit.

The new powertrain means greater fuel economy and better value for customers, says Chery. In actuality, combined fuel consumption only decreases by 1.4-percent, from 7.0L/100km to 6.9L/100km

Versatility does improve however: Chery’s 1.5L unit is compatible with 91 octane fuel, while the outgoing powertrain demands a minimum octane rating of 95.

All Chery Tiggo 7 models come with a seven-year / unlimited kilometre warranty, as well as seven years of roadside assistance and seven year capped price servicing.
