Polestar global details its three year plan to introduce four new vehicles to Australia, with two all-new models, one new-generation model, and one new variant on the table
Swedish Tesla rival Polestar will more than double its current showroom line-up by 2028 by adding a Polestar 7 small SUV, a second-generation Polestar 2 sedan, a more practical version of the Polestar 4, as well as this year’s Polestar 5 grand tourer.
All four vehicles will be battery electric, with Polestar CEO Michael Lohscheller telling Autocar that Polestar “[isn’t] even thinking about” adding internal combustion cars to its range. “No, we will not do a hybrid”, he said.
Chronologically, the offensive has already begun, starting with the global release of the five-metre-long Polestar 5 fastback that will become a Porsche Taycan rival. That car became available to order in December last year, launching with two model grades and a starting price of $171,100 before on-road costs.
Deliveries of the Polestar 5 are expected to commence by mid-year. More on that car here.
Next to come from the Chinese-owned (by Geely), Swedish-operated EV specialist is a new variant of Polestar 4 – Polestar’s global best-seller. Few technical details are known regarding the new variant, though Polestar claims it will “target a wider customer base by offering more versatility”.
A teaser image released by Polestar shows its new ‘4’ will debut an all new wagon-style body shape, this time with rear glass, in an effort to combine “the space of an estate… the versatility of an SUV [and]… the dynamic performance that is Polestar”. The current Polestar 4 ‘coupe’ uses a digital rear-view camera in lieu of a rear window.
Early in 2027, Polestar will follow with a replacement for its Polestar 2 sedan, the company’s most affordable model, its first ever global model launched in 2020, and second best-seller locally.
Polestar described the 2 as, “The car that we became known for [and] a key role of our future success.” Expect this Tesla Model 3 rival to retain a relatively affordable entry point and long range / performance offerings when it is updated next year.
Finishing in 2028, Polestar’s model offensive will cease with the introduction of a new, compact SUV known as the Polestar 7.
The Polestar 7 is expected to market in the premium small SUV segment as a key rival to the BMW iX1 and Mercedes-Benz EQA, which start from $80,600 and $80,700 respectively. However, remarks from Polestar suggest the ‘7’ could be its cheapest car yet.
“We are convinced that we can offer customers a progressive performance-driven car for a very attractive price point, built in Europe.” A remark from a Polestar press release read.
The Polestar 7 is an important vehicle for Polestar globally, particularly in Europe, where the compact SUV market accounted for one-third of total electric vehicle sales in 2025. For 2026, Polestar expects to deliver “low double-digit retail volume growth” with the beginning of its global rollout.
Geely-owned Polestar has struggled with financial difficulties in its early years but grew sales notably in 2025 – by 34 percent globally to just over 60,000 units. In Australia, Polestar sales increased by nearly 40 percent to 2373 units.
