With all new cars now built overseas, we take a look at which nation contributed the most new vehicles sales
For many Australian car buyers, brand lineage and place of manufacturing can make just as big of an impact on purchasing a car as fuel type or number of wheels. But the true location of manufacturing for some of Australia’s most popular vehicles may come as a surprise.
Australian car manufacturing ceased entirely with the exit of General Motors Holden in 2017. Since then, imported vehicles make up 100 percent of domestic vehicle sales, which in 2024 were led by the Ford Ranger (62,593 deliveries), Toyota RAV4 (58,718 deliveries), and Toyota Hilux (53,499 deliveries).
Last year, 1,220,607 cars were imported into Australia. As of June 2025, 608,811 vehicles have made their way to port.
We take a look at which countries lead the Australian markets so far in the first half of 2025, as well as providing insight as to which popular cars are manufactured in each nation. The numbers are based on official ‘VFACTS New Vehicle Sales By Country Of Origin’ data, as published by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI).
Note that some vehicles are assembled in more than one country, or, have different assembly plants depending on vehicle variant. Some vehicles listed show where the model is predominantly manufactured, rather than in its entirety.
Japan imports the largest number of vehicles into the Australian market. Top-selling makes and models available from Japan include: Mazda CX-5, Honda ZR-V, Toyota RAV4, Nissan X-Trail, Mitsubishi Outlander, and Subaru Forester.
Thailand imports the second-largest number of vehicles into the Australian market, which can be largely attributed to Thailand’s well-regarded utility manufacturing plants. Top-selling makes and models available from Thailand include: Isuzu D-MAX, Isuzu MU-X, Honda CR-V, Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, Mitsubishi Triton, and Nissan Navara.
China imports the third-largest number of vehicles into the Australian market. Chinese-assembled vehicles are rapidly increasing in popularity in Oz, as more Chinese brands compete for a top-ten position for overall vehicle sales.
In June 2025, Chinese brands BYD and Great Wall both saw huge success in the Aussie market, securing 8156 and 5464 sales respectively. In comparison, longstanding market-toppers Ford and Toyota secured 10,103 and 20,225 sales.
