Record month for Chinese automaker BYD spearheaded by PHEV and EV offerings
BYD has reported its best sales month on record in Australia, with an astounding 6.7 per cent market share recorded for June 2025. The brand registered 4811 vehicles, surpassing its previous record by 70 percent.
The record figure, which beat Kia (6.4 percent) and Mitsubishi (4.4 percent), comes less than three years after the Chinese carmaker’s November 2022 debut.
Year-to-date (YTD), new BYDs have made up 3.8 percent of the Australian new-car market, which surpasses fellow Chinese automaker MG (3.6 percent), and even Nissan (3.4 percent). For comparison, Toyota leads the Australian market with a 19.9 percent share.
BYD has sold 23,355 vehicles so far in 2025 – improving upon its entire 20,458 figure for 2024 by 168 percent. In the month of June, BYD’s growth is even more staggering with a 368 percent increase over June ’24.
Headlining BYD’s success was its Shark 6 plug-in hybrid ute, which shifted an impressive 2993 units to place as Australia’s fifth best-selling vehicle for June. The total number of Shark 6s sold in 2025 now sits at 10,424 – impressive for a vehicle less than 12 months old.
Not beating the Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux and Isuzu D-Max, the Shark 6 managed an incredible feat, beating huge sales names including the Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5 and others.
The $57,900 Shark 6 leads the growing PHEV ute market, which currently comprises the $71,990 Ford Ranger PHEV and $59,990 GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV. All prices stated are before on-road costs.
Note that the GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV has a promotional driveaway price of $57,490 until September 30 2025.
BYD’s Sealion 7 electric midsize SUV also had a great result, shifting 1795 units in June to total 3756 YTD sales.
This places it above Tesla’s Model 3 YTD figure of 3715 units, meaning the Sealion 7 is officially Australia’s second-best selling EV so far for 2025 – again, an impressive feat for a vehicle launched in February 2025.
The Sealion 7 was eclipsed only by the updated Tesla Model Y, which is at 10,431 sales YTD– the second best selling car on Earth, and Australia’s most popular EV.
BYD might be a fresh face in the Australian market, but globally, it is one of the most successful automakers in the industry.
BYD is furthering its Aussie offensive with the introduction of several new models next year and beyond.
A new affordable electric car in the Atto 2 and BYD’s first seven seater in the Sealion 8 will be first, before the luxury Denza brand arrives with Toyota Land Cruiser rivalling models such as the B5 and B8.
