MG’s first seven-seater large SUV undercuts key Toyota Kluger and Hyundai Santa Fe rivals with wealth of standard equipment and market-leading price
MG has priced its new seven-seat SUV, and it’s coming for the Toyota Kluger and Hyundai Santa Fe.
Called the QS, MG’s new model looks to take a large slice of a growing family SUV market in Australia. The QS will be available in two distinct trim levels: the Excite front-driver base model, and AWD Essence range-topper.
For a limited time, MG is offering introductory pricing which undercuts key market rivals by as much as $15,000. The base model Excite will start for a limited time at $46,990 drive-away, while the AWD Essence presents enters at $50,990 drive-away.
MG’s introductory driveaway prices undercut rivals such as the $62,410 (MSRP) Toyota Kluger, $53,000 (MSRP) Hyundai Santa Fe and $55,200 (MSRP) Mazda CX-80 by more than $15,000, $6000 and $8000 respectively.
The highly competitive pricing puts the QS in contention as Australia’s cheapest large SUV, being outpriced only by Chery’s Tiggo 8 Pro Max, which will cost $38,990 driveaway until June 30 (usually $43,990 DA).
It’s worth noting this pricing is for a limited time only, until May 31. Following the end of the month, MG’s website indicates regular driveaway pricing will climb around $6000 for the Excite, and nearly $10,000 for Essence, taking it beyond $60K.
Under the skin, the MG QS is identical to its global market Roewe RX9 sister car. It uses a 153kW/360Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol four-cylinder and nine-speed automatic.
There is speculation that a PHEV variant of QS could come in the future — an RX9 plug-in hybrid is already sold in overseas markets.
Dimensionally, the QS is one of the biggest in segment, out-sizing the Kluger measuring 4983mm long, 1967mm wide and 1778mm tall. Boot space is pretty competitive, with 203 litres behind the third row and 517L with five seats in place.
The combined average fuel consumption for the QS Excite is listed at 8.4L/100km (WLTP), while the AWD QS Essence uses a claimed 8.8L/100km (WLTP).
Both QS trims come standard with Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, power tailgate, and large alloy wheels — 20-inch for the Excite and 21-inch for the Essence. MG backs the QS with its long 10-year/250,000km warranty.
