BYD’s new midsize SUV topped last month’s EV charts as Tesla’s sales struggles continue
The BYD Sealion 7 was the best-selling electric vehicle last month as sales of the usually dominant Tesla Model Y plummeted in April.
BYD’s new midsize electric SUV registered 743 units in only the third month on sale, comfortably ahead of its direct Tesla rival that recorded only 280 sales.
A heavily updated version of the Model Y has only just gone on sale in May, though Tesla’s Model 3 fared poorly as well with only 220 registrations.
Several electric vehicles outsold both Teslas in April, including the MG4 (363), Kia EV5 (342), Kia EV3 (336), and Geely EX5 (324).
Tesla Australia told Chasing Cars it expects sales to normalise for May with deliveries of the refreshed Model Y only just commencing. The Tesla Model Y remains the most popular EV in Australia year to date, with a total of 3394 deliveries.
Sales continue to be relatively disappointing for other electric midsized SUVs in the market, which sold fewer than 100 units in April.
These included Sealion 7 and Model Y competitors such as the Toyota bZ4X (89 units), new Volkswagen ID.4 (57, with just 22 for the twin ID.5), Leapmotor C10 (56), Hyundai Ioniq 5 (46), Subaru Solterra and Skoda Enyaq (both 25 registrations), Ford Mustang Mach-E (24 units), and just three units for the Genesis GV60.
Polestar Australia will be relatively happy with the 124 registrations for its new Polestar 4 contender, which outsold other models in the range from the Swedish EV maker. The Polestar 2 sedan shifted 56 units, with 22 for the Porsche Macan-rivalling Polestar 3.
