MG4 EV 2026: Electric hatch gets an upmarket refresh and a big price drop for go-fast XPower AWD

Consolidated range sees small 51kWh battery and base Excite trim dropped as the three-year-old MG4 EV gets a much-needed interior and tech revamp

Three years after its local launch, the electric MG4 range has been consolidated from five to just two variants, bringing a welcome interior revamp, revised tech and sharper pricing, including a huge haircut for the go-fast dual-motor XPower variant.

The old entry-level Excite trim level has been axed, leaving the erstwhile high-spec Essence as the only rear-drive option on offer for MY26.

Similarly, both the standard 51kWh and high-spec 77kWh have been turfed, essentially consolidating four-single-motor variants into a sole Essence 64 rear-drive choice at $39,990 driveaway, or six grand cheaper than that same version was in MY25 guise ($45,990 D/A).

Although cheaper in price, the MY26 Essence 64 now mates a 140kW and 350Nm electric motor to its 64kWh LFP battery – was 150kW/250Nm in outgoing trim – yielding a claimed WLTP range peak of 452km (plays 450km in the old version).

The dual-motor XPower returns as the second variant choice, priced from $47,990 driveaway, eight grand more affordable than the outgoing MY25 spec ($55,990 D/A).

For MY26, the XPower stats are unchanged for power and torque, with carryover 150kW/250Nm front and 170kW/350Nm rear motors totalling 320kW and 600Nm combined, with a familiar 64kWh battery, though peak range appears boosted from 385km to 405km in the new model-year update.

The dual-motor pocket rocket is claimed to hit 100km/h from a standstill in 3.8 seconds.

The most conspicuous revamp for MY26 is the new “premium interior” remake, addressing criticisms of the old MG4 with fresh design lifted from the more upmarket S5 (and soon-to-launch S6) evident in higher-quality materials and revised user interface, including improvements such as a move to physical buttons for the HVAC system.

New interior features include a fresh 10.25-inch digital driver’s screen, a high-definition 12.8-inch media touchscreen with “card-style” layout, and more inbuilt features such as sat-nav, app integration facility (TikTok, YouTube, et al) and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for both variants.

The price-adjusted and more upmarket rear- and all-wheel-drive ‘MG4 EV’ line-up is complimented by the recently launched front-drive MG4 Urban, which now effectively sits as the more affordable (from $31,990 D/A) and smaller entry point to MG’s electric hatchback stable.
