In November we’ll be farewelling a very niche two-door sports car. I’m referring to, of course, the 2016 Volkswagen Scirocco R Wolfsburg.
The front-drive Scirocco coupe has struggled to beat the strong sales of the more mainstream Golf – but it has a strong following inside the Volkswagen fan community.
Australia has been allocated 150 of these cars and each edition will be numbered.
As we saw on the Golf R Wolfsburg Wagon last year, the Wolfsburg line is an emerging Volkswagen trim level that brings mainly aesthetic and feature upgrades.
Like the Scirocco R on which this car is based, the Wolfsburg will be offered with a choice of manual ($49,490) or DSG automatic ($51,990) gearboxes to pair with the two-litre turbo petrol.
That engine is based on the previous generation of Volkswagen two-litres, but it’s still potent, producing 188kW at 6,000rpm and 330Nm between 2,400rpm and 5,200rpm.
Those figures are channelled to the front wheels, differentiating the Scirocco from the similar but newer Golf R which packs 4MOTION all-wheel-drive.
The Wolfsburg special edition differentiates itself from the standard car by way of blacked-out, 19-inch Lugarno wheels, and new leather-and-Alcantara racing bucket style seats.
There’s also keyless access and start and a new colour multifunction display between the analogue gauges.
Wolfsburg Sciroccos will arrive in one of just two colours – Rising Blue, a metallic, or Oryx White, a pearl.
